So this is my first ever teaching experience. It kind of went very spontaneous since my cooperating teacher wasn't there to observe me. It's a good thing though, at least I was able to make some rapport with my students.
From the very start, I told them that I was nervous. I even asked them to be kind to me since it was my first teaching experience and for sure I will remember it for the rest of my life. It's kind of odd to stand infront of them, all eyes on me, patient, quiet, waiting for me to feed them with information.
You know how you list some motivation and stuff but when you see your students' faces, you'd be like, 'Nah, scratch the lesson plan!' So I started with fraction, I let my students draw this imaginary pizza, had it cut into slices, and so on. The students weren't completely behaving especially those people at the back. It kind of irritates me when students talk at the same time with me. I didn't got mad, it's just that, I wanted to be respected and it will be really nice if they keep quiet or at least pay attention.
There are those students who I think, most probably have ADD. It's just a thought, though. They're really irritating that I have to call their attention and repeatedly ask them to listen. When you're infront of 40 plus teenagers, you just can't control what you say. Well that's in my case. Maybe I'm just shocked with the number of students plus the pressure that I'm getting... I don't know. I think I did okay but what's hard is that the students are not as smart as the ones in the other section where you just need to give out examples, few explanations and there you go, sit back and give them a seatwork.
With this experience, I realized that your attitude and style of discipline depends on the students' attitude as well. In one class you can be funny, in another class you can be completely serious, especially if boys outnumbered the girls. I grew up in an all girls school and when I entered college, which I hoped is for girls only turned out to be co-ed already and since I'm enrolled I can't do anything about it but get along with it. It was hard to deal with guys especially with the noise that they're producing. It's like you'll know exactly when one is talking because of their deep voice, if they're matured. Girls' noise is so far from guys. Aside from the noise I also dealt with their naughtiness. I remember when I was in highschool, I was one of those students who answers back to teachers and answers nonsense things just to irritate the teacher, and I kinda think karma hit me! That's what exactly what they're doing. But wait that's just the FIRST day. FIRST day. What made it even worse is that, the guys were the ones doing it, not the girls. And they're just naughty as hell.
Being patient is one of the values that I try to imbibe nowadays. Aside from the continuous revision of the lesson plan from my cooperating teacher I also have to endure the noise and naughtiness that's coming from my students.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed teaching and still do. There's this feeling that I just can't explain :)
Who would've thought that I'd be teacher?
